Like Cain, the Gazel have quite a long history. Only eight survive to date, but originally there were twelve, and these men were the creators of the Anima Relics - they were the Animus (or if you prefer, terminal interfaces of Deus's system), direct descendants of Cain. Like the rest of their 'family', the Gazel were subject to Deus's programming and their purpose was to eventually unite with God.

This unity of purpose was fragmented during the war between Solaris and Nisan during Episode IV. The Gazel opposed Miang's plans and sought to rid themselves of her influence, which they did in spectacular fashion by handing her over to Shevat (in return for Sophia, who they never got - ha!) and blaming her for the entire conflict. But, maybe because of the bad karma they earned during this incident, they were all killed in the Diablos conflict that followed Sophia's death. Eight of them were revived in the SOL-9000 computer by Krelian, but the other four were lost forever.

But even computerized, they can still fulfill their purpose. They are the only ones that can use the Gaetia Key, and they still feel compelled to join with God, though as time passes (or maybe they felt this way all along) they desire to become gods more than just become one with the existing presence of Deus. Their arrogance didn't endear them to Krelian, and we all know that you should never anger a sociopathic benefactor. Their fate is quite funny, and you can see it on disc two of the game. ^.^

If you're curious, the eight living Gazel were named in the PW (well, at least, eight were given names, but they may not parallel the ones that are alive): Enoch, Irad, Mehujael, Methushael, Lamech, Jabal, Jubal, Tubal-Cain. They're all named after the descendants of Cain in the Bible.

The portrait is used with Franz's kind permission. ^.^
