The Prequel Arguement
The following is my view on Xenosaga and Xenogears and their relationship to each other.
With the release of Xenosaga came a debate which will probably rage on for quite some time. Is Xenosaga a prequel to Xenogears? After reading all of the arguements, it seems that there is just as much evidence to support Xenosaga as a prequel as there is as much evidence to support Xenosaga as an independent game. Therefore it is difficult to come to any solid conclusion. I believe this is because of the fact that the Xenogears copyright is owned by Square. This game was made with the intention of being a prequel, however, because of legal factors it wasn't possible to make a direct prequel. So which is it, prequel or not? Well after racking my brain for a few weeks I finally came to the conclusion that it was both. It's a prequel for the fans, because we know what's up. It's not a prequel to anyone else so that the creators can avoid being sued. I have a feeling that the creator had an extreme urge to tell the rest of the story. So he is basically telling us the basic story and putting enough discrepencies in there to (again I reiterate) avoid being sued, so we can see the rest of the story. Furthermore, the games are most definitly different, however the basic story remains the same, that is why it is and is not a prequel.
Personally I think Episode V will be remade as well to make the story complete instead of having four episodes of Xenosaga that can be argued to have no connection with the final episode, Xenogears.
