Chapter Five

"I drink," he said, "to the buried that repose around us."
"And I to your long life."

-- "The Cask of Amontillado", Edgar Allen Poe

"We must dispose of him. He is becoming too much of a bother."

"Perhaps." Krelian glanced at Miang through the corner of his eye, noting that she had once again left Ramsus behind, away from their supervision.

Strange, that. His presence would have made things much easier.

"It won't be hard, Krelian. Ramsus is nearly over the edge right now -- a casual push in the right direction, and we can dispose of Cain permanently." She flicked hair out of her indigo eyes, walking up to stand at his elbow. "Mahannon will be only a step away from there. If Raziel is still intact......"

He had to give her credit -- she did know how to tempt him, still. She knew what he wanted...... that was dangerous. But she had not used it against him -- yet.

Why......?

...........................

Terrifying...... those soft, warm hands against his skin...... drawing out of him something he couldn't fathom, and replacing it with part of herself. It was like she was ripping to shreds everything he held dear......

Sophia......

But he couldn't stop her -- he couldn't lift a hand, except to do her bidding.

Her eyes...... with a life of their own, glowing amethyst, just like Sophia's...... he couldn't look away from them. He couldn't look away, and he found he didn't want to.......

..........................

'Why'. Such a stupid question...... For one who could control a person's emotions with a simple glance...... It was a wonder he could still think for himself at all.

He was the fool. Krelian sighed, glancing over at her and doing his best to keep his voice expressionless. "You of all people should understand the importance of patience, Miang. If you've waited ten thousand years for this...... a few more months won't kill you." Her eyes narrowed. So I cannot hide these thoughts from her......? If that was so, what would it take to teach her a lesson? "Really Miang........" Her eyes had narrowed to slits. "You should show a little courtesy to the one who is using his talents to help you. If my will is strong enough, even for a moment......"

"Do you think you'll ever have Elly without me?" She rested her hand flat upon his back, and he flinched involuntarily. "But you're right......"

She removed her hand, and he bit back a retort. Her hands...... any contact with her made his skin crawl. He didn't think he would ever get used to it, not after...... not with the occurence in Shevat still haunting him.

It would never disappear. It was one of her weapons.

A weapon she was likely using at that moment, to undermine his confidence, his feelings......

Krelian clenched his teeth.

If ever he had hated one person...... it was Miang.

God........ if only there really was a god......

Blood was everywhere - the guards were all dead, or dying nearby. His hands, his armor, his exposed skin...... walls, floor...... even the bars of the iron cage that had held the one who called herself his 'angel'.

But he had only one angel........ and she was...... she was......

Light..... Light stabbed his eyes, bathing his world in dark indigo. It wrapped about him like a blanket, setting his skin tingling, and rendering him immobile. Her eyes...... He couldn't look away. They mesmerized him, mocking his memory of Sophia's...... and seeming at the same time to be their reflection.

Was it true, all that she had told him?

"Damn...... you......" The uneven floor of Shevat's prison bit into his back, sparking his mind into action again. "Damn you......"

With supreme effort, Krelian reached up and grasped a fistfull of her hair, clenching his fingers around it as if he meant to yank it out. Her entire body flinched, and the shine in her eyes died to a diffuse glow, mere inches from his face.

"Your doing!" He glared at her, feeling tears come to his eyes. "It was your doing!" Sophia...... His Sophia....... somehow, this woman was involved in her loss, he knew it......

Warm hands silenced him, running over his face and mouth in a caress that made him shudder in dread. He couldn't feel anything else...... but he knew she was streched out over his body, in that flimsy, bloodstained uniform......

He couldn't move........!

Panic welled up in his mind, burning his tears away. And she...... smiled...... just smiled....... and touched her lips to his......
