Silent Wishes

Chapter One

Emeralda sighed, letting her legs dangle over the edge of the bulkhead. The room she was in was all cold metal, gray and lifeless. Only one spot of color -- a white cot in the corner -- broke the monotony of the place. The rabbit-girl had told her it was a normal room..... at least, that was what she thought she heard.

No one...... no one could talk to her. Their words were garbled, like...... she didn't know what.

And the metal room reminded her of the lab, where she had been sleeping until the others had brought her out.

She wanted to go back there, so badly. That was a place she knew, a place she could connect with. Kim had been in that room. Kim had cried in that room......

She swallowed, feeling a bitter lump rise in her throat. Maybe she shouldn't think about Kim. She didn't know what happened after he put her in the reactor to sleep, but he had been crying...... and she had felt the strangest things...... She didn't know what it was, but she had not liked it.

Bitter wetness coated her lips, ran down her cheeks. Kim would have known what to do. Emeralda swallowed again, hugging herself tightly. He would have told her how to make this awful feeling go away. She felt so empty; she didn't know where she was, or where they were taking her, or even what they were saying when they tried to talk to her!

Her lips trembled. Where were they taking her?

"Why are they fighting the war? I don't understand. If it hurts them, why fight?"

Elly knelt down beside Emeralda, smoothing her thick hair -- her namesake -- back with gentle fingers. "I wish I could tell you. All I see is the poor people at the hospital, wounded and dying...... Kim is the idealist." She sighed, letting the child's bangs fall. "At least we still share our love. We always will."

"What if something bad happens to us?" Emeralda whispered, feeling her eyes grow wet. She didn't understand it; was something wrong with her? "What if we get lost?"

"Doesn't matter." Elly smiled. "You're a part of us, no matter how you were created. And we love you no matter what."

Voices.

No, one loud voice.

Emeralda opened her eyes, blinking her sticky lids and focusing on the person trying to talk to her. The girl was back again, and the man giving orders was with her. It was his loud voice that had jarred her out of her dream.

Elly....... Kim......

Why had he ruined her dream? She felt the same shiny wetness in her eyes, but she held it back. She knew she wanted to cry, like Kim had been crying, but this was not the place to do it. Not with this man staring at her expectantly, waiting for an answer to whatever he had said.

"I don't understand," she said quietly, staring up at him. He looked at her blankly, and she sighed.

No...... Nobody understood her......
